For a woman, breast size can be an integral part of self-confidence. If a woman has had to cope with breasts that she feels are either disproportional or simply too small, having her breasts increased through augmentation can change her life. Still, the decision to have breast augmentation is not a casual one.
If you’re considering breast augmentation, the first step is a consultation with Dr. Kirwan. Together, you’ll discuss your goals and expectations of the procedure. Expectations need to be realistic. If you then decide to go ahead with the surgery, there are some additional decisions you’ll need to make.
With augmentation, you’ll have four additional decisions beyond simply opting to have the procedure.
Implant type. You’ll choose between saline implants or silicone implants. Both types have pluses and minuses. Most people feel that silicone implants have a more natural feel than saline. However, if a saline implant ruptures, your body simply absorbs the salt water. If a silicone implant ruptures, you’ll need to have any silicone that has leaked removed.
Implant position. You’ll decide if you want the implant placed atop the breast muscle or underneath the breast muscle. Many believe that implants placed under the muscle have a more natural look, but this is all personal preference.
Incision location. Implants can be placed through incisions either at the bottom of the breast, near or in the areola, or in the armpit. Obviously, incisions in the armpit leave the least visible scarring.
Implant style. The last of your decisions will be the size and shape of your implants. You will also decide if you want your implants to have texture, which can help to keep them from shifting.
While these decisions may seem daunting, Dr. Kirwan will help you will all of them, making the process much easier. Call for an appointment and let’s discuss your possibilities.
