The IDEAL IMPLANT is a smooth round, saline-filled breast implant. The implant combines the ideal features of Saline and Silicone Implants to create a new generation of implants with a state-of-art technology that is the first significant change in breast implant design in decades.
Dr. Kirwan is the first Plastic Surgeon in Fairfield County and one of a select few in the United States, to use the Ideal Implant. The Implant is designed by an innovative plastic surgeon, Dr. Hamas who combined the best features of Saline and Silicone Implants. The implant has the shape and consistency of a silicone implant, without silicone.
What’s the difference?
The Ideal Implant is built differently. The original implant is a silicone shell filled with a silicone gel. Over the last 50 years manufacturers have improved the strength of the shell and the ‘stickiness’ of the silicone gel. Saline implants have pretty much stayed the same. The only other change in both types has been to create a variety of shapes and sizes from low profile to extra-high-profile-round saline and silicone implants and tear-drop-shaped silicone ‘gummy-bear’ implants.
The Ideal Implant is the first one to use internal ‘baffles’ to prevent the saline inside from sloshing around. It is a ‘Structured’ Breast Implant containing a multi-layered onion-like structure that holds two separate spaces filled with saline.
Floating in the outer space is a baffle structure of several partitions designed to prevent free flow of saline. These partitions are perforated so the saline can move through, around and between the shells. The inner and outer spaces are filled before or after placing the implant in its pocket.
IDEAL IMPLANT has Advantages over Silicone Gel Implants
Natural feel is not the only thing women care about.
FDA approved intact silicone gel implants as safe. However, if a silicone gel implant ruptures, the FDA says the “implant and any gel should be removed.”
IDEAL IMPLANT is an alternative that is natural in feel and zeroes out the risk of silent rupture.
Benefits of Ideal Implant
- no worrisome ‘silent’ ruptures.
- no MRI’s required to detect ruptures.
- The patient can tell the implants are intact simply by looking at them.
- No silicone gel to be concerned about.
- Ideal implants are easy to remove if ruptured.
- Higher shell strength.
- lower implant leakage rate after 5-years – first-time breast enlargement.
- lower capsule contracture rate after 5-years – first-time breast enlargement.
The design of the Ideal Implant results in a nicer shape and lower rupture/leakage rates.
A saline breast implant is like a ‘water-balloon’. There is no internal structure and the upper part collapses when the implant is held upright. Saline implants have wrinkles and ripples and this is one of the major reasons why patients avoid saline.
Silicone Breast Implant
Silicone gel implants feel more natural. Regular silicone gel-filled implants feel like breast tissue, but since they are pre-filled, they can be damaged when inserted through a small incision. Implant damage is usually undetectable and requires an MRI scan for diagnosis.
The Structured Implant has an inner chamber, which holds the inner saline filler, and an outer chamber, which also holds saline. Between the inner and outer shells are one to three baffles, designed to limit flow of the saline inside. This is what creates the natural feel.
Why not just use a Silicone Implant?
If the IDEAL IMPLANT tries so hard to imitate the feel of a Silicone implant, why not just go with silicone? Here’s why.
|FDA Update on Silicone Gel Implants, June 2011||Health Canada, Summary Basis of Decision, January 2014||Aesthetic Surgery Journal Vol 35, Pages 145-155, February 2015|
Statistics are for women in FDA Core clinical trials who had primary breast augmentation and were followed with regular screening MRI scans to detect rupture of their implants.
From the FDA statistics, above, the risk of rupture is significant. Ultrasound or MRI studies are needed to make sure silicone implants are intact. If a saline implant leaks, you know immediately. But the downside of a saline implant is that it does not feel like a silicone implants. The Ideal implant has the benefits of a saline, while looking and feeling like a siliconeimplant.
