Are your eyes telling tales about you? They say the eyes are the windows to the soul, and whether you believe that or not, one thing’s for sure: Your eyes can definitely make you look older – sometimes a lot older – than you really are. In our 30s, the delicate eyelid skin begins to sag and droop, tiny bags or “puffy” areas can become evident. Some of these signs occur as a result of the effects of gravity pulling downward on our skin, other factors like sun exposure and even genetics can also play a role. The result: we wind up looking tired, worn out and haggard, even when we’ve had a good night’s sleep and feel energized and rested. Eyelid plastic surgery can reduce this tired, worn out appearance greatly.
In recent years, eyelid plastic surgery has emerged as a great option for women and men looking to combat these signs of aging, offering effective, long-lasting results that can dramatically improve your appearance. Also called blepharoplasty, eyelid plastic surgery can be used to treat the upper or lower lids (or both), and it can be combined with other techniques like BOTOX® to treat crow’s feet and sagging brows to rejuvenate the entire eye and brow area. Chemical peels of the lower eyelid area and crow’s feet as well as an endoscopic browlift; can also be combined with eyelid surgery.
Eyelid Plastic Surgery: What to Expect
Prior to eyelid plastic surgery, your eyelids will be carefully assessed to determine the amount of tissue that needs to be removed to achieve optimal results. You’ll also have an opportunity to discuss your specific concerns to determine if another procedure like a brow lift, chemical peel, BOTOX® or other approaches are recommended to help you achieve your goals.
During the eyelid surgery procedure, incisions are made to access and remove excess tissue and fatty deposits, leaving eyes looking wider and awake resulting in a more refreshed and youthful appearance. Surgical incisions are placed within the lid folds of the upper lid and along the lid margin of the lower lid or just inside the lower lid so they’re not visible. In some instances, lasers or chemical peels may be used on the lower lid skin to help remove fine lines and wrinkles and provide a smoother, more youthful appearance. Most procedures take about an hour to complete. You’ll need to plan to take a week or so off from work to allow the area to begin healing. Eyelid procedures can be performed under local anesthesia in our Norwalk Office.
Is eyelid surgery right for you?
Thousands of people undergo eyelid plastic surgery every year with great results, but it’s not the best choice for everyone with “droopy” eyelids. Some eyelid issues are caused by sagging brows, and in those cases, a brow lift or even a facelift may be a better option for helping you achieve the results you’re looking for. Patients with chronic eye conditions including severe dry eye syndrome also may not be the best candidates. Before any eyelid surgery is performed, it’s a good idea to have an eye exam to look for issues that could potentially be exacerbated by the surgical procedure.
